Waking Up White Book Discussion

Never has it been more important for those of us who are white to realize the impact of our whiteness. Debby Irving published Waking Up White in 2014, and its full title tells the story – Waking Up White: And Finding Myself in the Story of Race.

Now is your chance to read this important book, or maybe to re-read it, and to talk about it in small groups. Our UUCP Racial Justice Task Force has created a schedule for a three-part discussion of the book in small groups. Each group will meet three times, covering roughly one-third of the book each time. We’ll meet – on Zoom, of course – starting the weekend of June 27-28, the week of July 12, and the week of July 26. Here are the dates and times:

Saturday at 2 pm – June 27, July 11, and July 25

Sundays at 4 pm – June 28, July 12, and July 26

Sundays at 7 pm – June 28, July 12, and July 26

Mondays at 7 pm – June 29, July 13, and July 27

Tuesdays at 4 pm – June 30, July 14, and July 28

Tuesdays at 7 pm – June 30, July 14, and July 28

Wednesdays at 7 pm – July 1, July 15, and July 29

Thursdays at 4 pm – July 2, July 16, and July 30

Thursdays at 7 pm – July 2, July 16, and July 30

Please go to the “Sign-up Genius” tab on the congregation’s website: www.uuprinceton.org  There you will find sign-ups for each day. When you sign up for the first session, you are automatically signed up for sessions two and three on the same week day and time. You’re invited to select your schedule and join the group! Each session will last 90 minutes. Please try to attend all three of your sessions. Zoom links will be sent the day before each session.

When you RSVP through Sign Up Genius, indicate in the comment space if you need a book.

And the books are available for free! We have a supply of the books, and will give them to congregants at the church starting the afternoon of June 14. While we’re not charging for the book, you may make a gift of $20 to reimburse the congregation’s cost. Of course, if you already have the book, there’s no need to get another copy.

We look forward to having a good cross-section of the congregation in our small groups. Youth are especially encouraged to sign up! Others, too – invite friends!

Please join one of these groups. Waking Up White is a very readable and eye-opening book that tells the author’s own story of discovery and self-discovery. Many readers have experienced their own discoveries by reading and discussing this book.
