Love at the Center

At General Assembly in June, our denomination voted to update Article II of the UUA Bylaws. Sounds a bit dry. In fact, Article II is where our beloved Seven Principles and Six Sources have lived since they were written in 1984. Reviewing Article II every 15 years is a requirement of our bylaws, part of our living tradition. While we have reviewed them over time, this is the first major update in 40 years. We have updated Article II to be about our Values. The magazine, UU World says, “the new values are Equity, Generosity, Interdependence, Justice, Pluralism, and Transformation, centered around Love.” They aren’t actually new to us, though. We are bringing them to the fore, and claiming the love that motivates many of us already. Let’s look at what it means to put love at the center of our congregation, our work in the world, and our lives.
