Liberating Lost Souls: Tending a Local Wound of White Supremacy

Two hundred years ago, a corrupt Middlesex County judge sold 177+ African Americans into permanent slavery. An insidious chapter of the Second Middle Passage, it was whitewashed and largely forgotten. No more. As our nation grapples with which monuments to tear down and which to build up, you can take up the pledge to liberate the Lost Souls and to re-member them home.

Rev. Karen G. Johnston is in her fourth year as the settled minister at our sibling congregation in East Brunswick. She currently serves on the board of UU FaithAction New Jersey and is facilitating community gatherings to help people process climate grief. A Buddhist meditation practice sustains her, especially when she sustains it.
